Scope

A master electrician is an experienced electrical professional who has attained the highest level of trade licensure recognized in many U.S. jurisdictions. Master electricians typically complete a formal apprenticeship, gain substantial experience as licensed journeymen, and pass an advanced examination covering electrical theory, system calculations, applicable codes, safety requirements, and local regulations. Within the authority granted by the state or local jurisdiction, a master electrician may plan and lay out electrical installations; calculate electrical loads; select appropriate wiring methods, equipment, and overcurrent protection; install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair complex electrical systems; obtain permits; coordinate required inspections; and verify that completed work complies with the National Electrical Code and all applicable state and local requirements. Master electricians may also supervise and train journeymen and apprentices, manage electrical projects, prepare estimates, maintain project records, and ensure safe work practices. When serving as the responsible master electrician for an electrical contractor or business, the individual may assume professional and legal responsibility for work performed under that license. The precise scope of authority varies by jurisdiction. Some states do not use the master-electrician classification, and the design of certain engineered electrical systems may require approval or preparation by a licensed professional engineer.
